New White Labs brewhouse

White Labs is now serving beer made on its new 20-barrel brewhouse.

The brewhouse's purpose is two-fold, with the primary function to provide wort for yeast production. The wort is fed into an adjacent clean room via piping for yeast production. Several runs are made each day for this purpose.White Labs is now serving beer made on its new 20-barrel brewhouse.

"We will now have much greater control over our malt supply, which will help us with quality and flexibility, and that is great news for everyone," said Chris White, Founder and CEO of White Labs.

The second purpose is to provide beer for the tasting room. Several beer runs are made each month for the brewery. Sixteen fermentors (more than a typical brewery of this size, as each beer is split into four smaller batches for fermentation) and four bright tanks were installed for this purpose.

The multi-million dollar brewhouse is operated by a team of five, led by Joe Kurowski, Brewing and Yeast Specialist at White Labs. The brewhouse is the largest and most automated that White Labs has ever installed.

Since opening in 2012, the White Labs Tasting Room has offered hand-crafted beer (drawn from 32 taps and three beer engines) in a most unique way. When each beer is split into the smaller batches, different yeast strains ferment each batch, showcasing the role that yeast plays in beer flavor.

The beers are typically served as tasters so that customers can experience these flavor differences, although pints are available as well.

White Labs has relaunched tours as part of the new brewhouse and other recently completed construction projects at White Labs. Tours are available Monday-Thursday at 5 p.m., Friday-Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
