Description

A traditional altbier-style yeast from Düsseldorf, Germany. It produces clean, malty German brown and amber ales. This strain keeps the contribution of hop bitterness in the background while promoting sweet malt notes.

WLP036 is the traditional choice for altbier, but its clean, malt-forward profile also suits kölsch, cream ale, and red ale where hop bitterness should stay in the background. With medium attenuation (65–72%) and medium flocculation, it strikes a balance between a dry finish and manageable clarity without extended lagering. Fermenting cleanly between 65–69°F, WLP036 behaves more like a lager yeast at ale temperatures, so a cooler, controlled fermentation brings out its best malt character.
